PATRICK JOSEPH McCALL

P. J. McCall was born in Patrick Street, Dublin in 1861 and died there in 1919. He wrote a great many songs and poems of a patriotic character and also did translations from Irish. His summer holidays were spent in Rathangan, County Wexford, where he made the acquaintance of local musicians and ballad singers. He collected many old Irish airs, but is best remembered for his patriotic ballads. For many years he ran a tavern that was a meeting place for Irish language enthusiasts.
